Mastercuts' three-volume Classic Rare Groove series provides a sampling of the early-'90s .-based phenomenon curated by Norman Jay , the DJ behind London's pirate radio station Kiss FM. The term "rare groove," as defined by Jay through his play lists, encompasses late-'70s and early-'80s dance musics that take in disco, R&B, jazz, funk, and all hybrids of those genres. While each volume has some true treasures, not everything can be expected to be earth-shattering. The third volume features Heatwave 's "Ain't No Half-Steppin'," Archie Bell & the Drells ' "It's Hard Not to Like You," Loleatta Holloway 's "All About the Papers," Marlena Shaw 's "Look at Me, Look at You," and Norman Connors ' "Stella."
